Through the use of electronic IDs, the cow-calf producers will be able to retrieve finishing and carcass data on their calves after they are gone from the ranch. This will provide valuable input for the producers when making future management, seed- stock, and health decisions. This small ID should be welcomed as a management and good record keeping tool rather than viewed with disapproval as an invasion of privacy. It will allow us to follow the calves through the entire feeding and finishing phase. We will form alliances with commercial feedlots to assure the proper transfer of data back to the ranch of origin. We will also gain premiums by providing date of birth and ranch origin. Grid marketing may also allow premiums for the producer at slaughter.
